Other forms: metr. length. Οὔλ-. Ruijgh points to a variant Οὐλυμπ-, Myc. urup- (Études ́173).
Derivatives: Όλύμπιος `Olympic' (Il.), Όλυμπία f. region in Elis Pisatis with a famous temple of Zeus (Pi., IA.; cf. v. Wilamowitz Glaube 1, 224).
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: Prob. orig. appellative `mountain', without doubt Pre-Greek. Report of the discussion in v. Windekens Le Pélasgique 66ff. (s. also Beitr. z. Namenforsch. 6, 117). Cf. noch Nilsson Gr. Rel. 1. 353 f. - As Pre-Greek had no phoneme o, the word must have had a different initial. Perh. Myc. urupija(jo) point to an orig. u-, which is one of the phonemes that could become o- (though the interpretation of the Myc. word is debated); so was the orig. word (*)Ulump(-)?
